The highest frequency for a transformer depends on various factors such as the design, materials used, and the application. While typical high-frequency transformers operate in the range of tens of kilohertz (kHz) to several megahertz (MHz), the upper limits can extend beyond this in specialized applications.

Standard High-Frequency Transformers: These usually operate up to a few megahertz (MHz). For example, switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) often use transformers in the range of 20 kHz to 1 MHz.

RF Transformers: In radio frequency (RF) applications, transformers can operate up to hundreds of megahertz (MHz). RF transformers are designed for specific uses such as impedance matching and signal isolation in communication devices.

Microwave Frequencies: For frequencies higher than the typical RF range, reaching into the microwave spectrum (above 1 GHz), traditional transformer designs become impractical due to losses and inefficiencies. Instead, other technologies like transmission lines, waveguides, and resonators are used.

Specialized Research and Development: In cutting-edge research, specialized transformers have been designed to operate at even higher frequencies, occasionally reaching up to several gigahertz (GHz). These are typically experimental and tailored for specific advanced applications, such as in high-frequency RF testing equipment or specific high-speed data communication systems.

The practical upper limit for conventional transformer designs in commercial applications is generally around a few hundred megahertz. Beyond this, the efficiency drops significantly, and alternative technologies are preferred to handle higher frequencies effectively.
